Understanding Melasma: Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Management

Melasma is a common skin condition characterized by the appearance of sequenced brown patches on the face. It presents in a discernible pattern, sometimes referred to as a ‘pregnancy mask’. However, Melasma doesn’t require one to be pregnant to have the skin condition.

These patches are usually symmetrical; presenting on the mid forehead, high cheekbones, mid chin and upper lip; commonly referred to as the ‘melasma mustache’.

While melasma does not cause any physical discomfort, it can be a source of emotional distress due to its impact on appearance.

The diagnosis of melasma is typically straightforward, as the appearance has a distinct pattern, making the disorder visually evident.

Melasma’s primary impact is hormonally influenced, oftentimes having a genetic predisposition. Hormonal shifts during pregnancy and the use of varied birth control is often what triggers the development of melasma. Additionally, excessive sun and heat exposure can worsen the condition.

While melasma cannot be cured, there are several management strategies that can help reduce its appearance significantly and prevent further darkening:

  • Daily use of sunscreen, to include reapplication when in the sun for extended periods of time.

  • Topical Treatment, such as Hydroquinone, Vitamin C serum and/or bioidentical creams to lighten the patches. The best outcome ensues when using one or more of the topical creams listed.

  • Chemical peels, specified to treat discoloration in the skin.

  • Laser Therapy: In some cases, laser treatments like intense pulsed light (IPL) or fractional laser resurfacing can target the pigmented areas.

Melasma is a common skin condition affecting women in particular.

By understanding the symptoms and management options, individuals can take proactive steps to minimize the appearance of melasma and regain confidence in their skin.
